The Halcyon Private Isles: An Overwater Villa Escape in the Maldives
The Maldives had lived on my bucket list for years. The fantasy was simple: an overwater villa, a ladder into the sea, and days shaped by the rhythms of the reef.
That vision absolutely came to life—but what surprised me most was how much the experience hinges on choosing the right resort. In the Maldives, there is no universal “best.” The decisions you make before you arrive—location, reef access, villa layout, transfer logistics—don’t just shape your stay; they define it.
Here’s what we learned, where we stayed, and why the details mattered more than we expected.
Choosing a Maldives Resort: What Actually Matters
The Maldives is not a one-size-fits-all destination. If anything, it’s selecting your resort is one of the most nuanced luxury travel decisions you’ll make. Before booking, we quickly realised how many variables are at play:
- Location: Speedboat vs. seaplane—and how much travel time you’re willing to trade for remoteness
- Marine life: Heavily dependent on atoll and season
- House reef: Direct access vs. snorkeling only accessible by boat
- Shoreline design: Natural reefs vs. engineered seawalls
- Dining: Buffets vs. à la carte; half-board vs. all-inclusive
- Resort scale: Villa count and overall density
- Villa design: Privacy, spacing, deck layout, and water depth below
- Budget: Including hidden costs like transfers and meal plans
The list goes on. For us, three priorities rose to the top: access to a great reef, an amazing villa, and a quieter, low-density experience.
The Halcyon Private Isles
We chose to head south to Gaafu Alifu Atoll, to The Halcyon Private Isles—a former Raffles property now rebranded under Marriott’s Autograph Collection. Remote, understated, and intentionally low-key, it felt like a return to what the Maldives used to be like before it got so popular.
The resort spans two islands and offers a healthy, accessible house reef, no seawalls, and just 38 villas total, split between beach and overwater villas

Arrival: Remote, but Seamless
We arrived via a private chartered seaplane operated by Trans Maldivian Airways, the world’s largest seaplane operator. The journey was 90 minutes from Male —but once we touched down, everything felt effortless. We were welcomed with drums, fresh coconuts, flower garlands, and introductions to our butler before a short five-minute speedboat transfer to the villa island. Waiting inside: sweet treats and a bottle of champagne to welcome us.

Our Overwater Villa Experience
We stayed in Villa 34, an overwater pool villa positioned mid-jetty with uninterrupted sunset views. We walked in and our jaws dropped – the villa was enormous and just gorgeous.
Highlights included:
- A large, sun-drenched living room with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the ocean
- An oversized king size bed, so big we didn’t know what to do with all the space!
- A large walk-in closet that you can actually unpack into
- A bathroom with double sinks, soaking tub, and both rain and standard showers—usable simultaneously and overlooking the ocean
- Sliding doors from all rooms opening directly onto the deck
- A large infinity pool facing the sunset
- A suspended hammock / net over the water
- Ample deck space (with a sunbed and lounger) with a ladder straight into the sea
While the water depth didn’t allow for jumping straight off the deck —even at high tide—it hardly mattered. The ladder dropped us directly onto the reef, and within seconds we were snorkeling among turtles, rays, and schools of fish.
Privacy was exceptional. No shared platforms, no tightly clustered villas—an often-overlooked detail when booking overwater accommodations elsewhere.

Two Islands, Thoughtfully Executed
Overwater villas and one of the restaurants sit on one island, with two other restaurants, tennis courts, the beach and general main facilities on the other. A 24/7 boat shuttle connects the two and runs so efficiently it never felt like a logistical burden—only a design choice that preserved tranquility.
Dining: Refined, Flexible, and Personal
The Halcyon offers three restaurants, Thari, Yuzu and Firepit as well as two bars (and in-room dining). What stood out immediately was the absence of buffet dining. Everything was à la carte, with expansive menus and clearly defined concepts.
The food was consistently excellent, but the real standout was Chef Harpal—warm, creative, and deeply accommodating. Over the course of the week, he and his team learned our preferences, adjusted dishes accordingly, and even accommodated off-menu requests when possible (as long as they had the ingredients).
Standouts included:
- Sushi at Yuzu. I could have eaten this literally everyday!
- Exceptional, freshly baked pastries (the almond croissants and apple crisp were highlights—the pastry chef is outstanding)
- Fresh mango juice we eagerly looked forward to each morning at breakfast
Even though in-room dining wasn’t included in our meal plan, the staff delivered Yuzu’s amazing sushi to our villa one evening when I was on a conference call —a small but meaningful gesture that perfectly captured the resort’s approach to service.

Service That Feels Genuinely Personal
Throughout the week, service felt intuitive rather than scripted:
- Our butler was attentive without hovering.
- Ahmed, the property manager, checked in regularly and thoughtfully,
- Peter, the resident marine biologist, was a highlight—knowledgeable, friendly, and deeply connected to the reef.
- From waitstaff to boat captains, everyone was warm, engaged, and genuinely kind.
Snorkeling, Diving, and Marine Life
The house reef was exceptional. With Peter’s guidance, we quickly learned the reef’s topography and best entry points. We snorkelled multiple times a day and consistently saw turtles, rays, reef sharks and dense healthy coral and fish!
A guided night snorkel with Peter became one of the most memorable experiences of the trip. At night, the nocturnal marine life become active and we were able to see the bioluminescent plankton first-hand.
The resort also features a 5-star PADI dive center and a full watersports operation. I completed four dives; while visibility wasn’t ideal during our stay, we still spotted dolphins from the boat and even a manta one day.
Additional activities include kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, jet skis, dolphin cruises, and nightly live music—enough variety to keep things dynamic without ever feeling busy.

Life on the Island
With just 38 villas, the resort feels deeply intimate. We rarely saw other guests—by design. Nothing ever felt booked up or unavailable, from restaurant tables to loungers to tennis courts.
The island felt exceptionally safe; leaving belongings unattended while snorkeling never crossed my mind.
Our rhythm quickly settled into something perfect: Breakfast → snorkeling or diving → lunch → villa downtime → more snorkeling → dinner → occasional night snorkel
Seven nights flew by. It was perfect, but I wouldn’t have complained if we had more.

Final Thoughts
The Halcyon delivered precisely what we were looking for: exceptional reef access, true privacy, thoughtful service, and a genuine sense of escape. If you’re dreaming of an overwater villa and care deeply about reef quality, privacy, and personalised service, The Halcyon Private Isles deserves a serious look.
