  >  Destinations  >  Mexico  >  Cancun in COVID

We were finally vaccinated and ready to travel!  Mexico was open and Cancun was the perfect, easy beach getaway to finally get in a holiday.

Aarthi and I spent 5 nights at the Westin Cancun, which has a nice pool and a private beach.  The hotel itself is further from the main strip, but it’s easy to get around as the buses run up and down the strip regularly, and only cost $1.00. That said, the service in the hotel is poor, there are no balconies and the main restaurant is terrible. We appreciated being on the ground floor and having a private terrace right on the beach so it worked out fine for us.

We spent plenty of time at the Westin pool and beach, but we did manage to get out and experience some of the other highlights of Cancun.

I spent two days diving with Manta divers, which was pleasant diving. The water was choppy so it wasn’t the most pleasant boat ride but the dives were beautiful.

We also did a full day sailing trip with Cancun Sailing on one of their luxury catamarans. We upgraded to have a small group and joined a handful of others to head out to Isla Mujeres for the day.  Given the strong winds, the sailing was fantastic. It meant no spinnaker rides or snorkeling, but we were content with drinks, sailing and a nice visit around Isla Mujeres.

We also made a visit through downtown Cancun and spent some time shopping at Isla Mujeres, an open air mall in the middle of the Cancun strip. It wasn’t a planned day, but somehow we enjoyed getting some new summer clothing while in Mexico!

In terms of restaurants, we ate at Puerto Madero (3 stars), Navios (amazing atmosphere for dinner), Tora (good food and a bizarre dinner/night club like experience), and Seas and Stones (the other restaurant at the Westin would was great.

So overall a great trip. Not a trip I’d normally take but a perfect post-vaccinated getaway!
