  >  Destinations  >  Iceland  >  Iceland Road Trip: East Fjords & Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

We woke up to a view of the lake in Egilsstadir and spent the day driving along the East Fjords. We started towards the fjord Reydarfjörður, and continued through Stöðvarfjörður and Djúpivogur. The drive towards Southeast Iceland is stunning – filled with green landscapes and at times, the road hangs precariously high on the mountain slopes.

We made several stops along the way to take in the scenary, which is vast with quaint fishing villages amongst towering mountains.

We included a stop along the black sand beach of Breiddalsvík .  This spectacular valley is the longest and widest of the valleys in eastern Iceland, surrounded by majestic, alpine mountains rising on both sides to over 1100 meters.

After passing various outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest ice cap, we arrived at the Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon.  At the stunning lagoon, we took a zodiac boat tour among the

icebergs to see the glacier up close, which was spectacular.  Given that it was the last tour of the day, it was really peaceful when we returned to shore, and guess what? the seals came out to play!

After some time with the seals, we checked into our hostel, and then ran out for a quick dinner at the Hotel Skaftafell – literally the only restaurant in a 30 mile radius, who had a kitchen open after 8:30pm!
