Before leaving Jaisalmer, we decided to
spend a night in the Thar Desert. On the
way, we visited Gadsisar Lake for a quick view, but opted out on the boat ride
as it was hot and not the most impressive scenery. That said, it is interesting because it is actually a water conservation tank made around 1400 AD by Maharwal Gadsi Singh (the maharaja), acting as a reservoir that controlled the entire water supply to the city.
We also stopped at Bada Bagh, a royal cemetary. Maharaja Jai Singh II commissioned work to create a damn in the 16th century, creating a lake in the desert and bringing greenary. Upon his death, his son built a garden and cenotaph in his honour, which in turn, turned into a royal cemetary. Today, it is also used in many films, including Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
The Thar Desert
I could only compare this desert experience with the Sahara, which was a
completely different experience.
