We had planned to spend the day kayaking to Monkey Island, but our tour was cancelled due to high winds and rough seas, so we ended up taking a trip to the rainforest.

Everything I read suggested that if there is one day trip to make from San Juan, it is to El Yunque.  It is a beautiful rainforest and worth a visit, especially as it is so close to San Juan. You can easily spend the day hiking in the rainforest, but given the humidity (and our laziness), we made it a half day trip.

Following our visit to the rainforest, we continued a bit further east to Luquillo Beach.  This is just a local beach, but it was a good stop for swimming as the sand is soft and the water is clear and calm, not to mention the views of the rainforest in the background! 

Also, just down the road from the beach, there are a bunch of kioskos, or local food stalls, which are selling everything from local food to burgers and pina coladas – nothing spectacular, but it made for an easy, quick lunch.
